The LBTEK Quartz Multi-Order Half-Wave Plate is made from a single piece of quartz crystal, featuring a relatively large thickness and simple fabrication. When a beam of linearly polarized light is incident perpendicularly on a waveplate made of uniaxial crystal, it splits into o-light and e-light that propagate in the original direction but vibrate perpendicularly to each other, with corresponding refractive indices no and ne. Due to the different velocities of the two lights in the crystal, the phase retardation produced after passing through a waveplate of thickness d is δ = (2π/λ)|no-ne|d. Here, |no-ne|d represents the optical path difference, and the half-wave plate generates an optical path difference of (2m+1)λ/2, with a phase retardation of δ = (2m+1)π, where m is a non-negative integer. For multi-order half-wave plates, m is not zero, and the thickness is determined by the order m. Compared with zero-order half-wave plates, light passing through a multi-order half-wave plate experiences an additional phase retardation of m full wavelengths, making it more sensitive to wavelength. The LBTEK Quartz Multi-Order Half-Wave Plate is commonly used to rotate the polarization direction of linearly polarized light.
