Product Description

The LBTEK Liquid Crystal Variable Retarder (LCVR) is based on nematic liquid crystal and ITO glass materials, constructed with an anti-parallel liquid crystal cell, housed in a mechanical casing with attached wiring. It comes in two variants: without retardation compensation and with retardation compensation. Under the influence of the polyimide layer's friction alignment, the fast-axis orientation of its liquid crystal molecules remains uniform across the entire component plane. By applying an external AC voltage (DC voltage not allowed), the uncompensated liquid crystal cell achieves flexible tunability with a retardation range of approximately several tens of nanometers to λ/2, while the compensated liquid crystal cell offers a retardation range from 0 to λ/2. Based on its tunable retardation characteristics, the LBTEK LCVR has two typical applications: 1. When used as a polarization modulator, the polarization direction of the incident linearly polarized light should be at 45° to the fast axis of the LCVR to achieve the widest adjustment range. 2. When used as a pure phase retarder, the polarization direction of the incident linearly polarized light should align with the fast axis of the LCVR at 0°. The retardation adjustment does not rely on mechanical components, ensuring fast response times. It is suitable for a broad spectrum while maintaining a wide operating temperature range and excellent retardation uniformity. LBTEK offers standard LCVR products with working wavelengths (λ) of 400-700 nm, 700-1100 nm, and 1100-1700 nm, available in both uncompensated and compensated versions. The LBTEK 1-inch Half-Wave Compensated Liquid Crystal Variable Retarders is coated with corresponding anti-reflection coatings for the opertaing wavelength range of 400-700 nm, 700-1100 nm, or 1100-1650 nm. Through the effect of the compensation plate, it can achieve flexible adjustment of the retardation from 0 to λ/2 under the control of an external AC voltage (DC voltage not allowed). It features a clear aperture of Ø10 mm, mounted in a mechanical housing with attached wiring. The mechanical housing is compatible with Ø1-inch optical component mounts and is marked with the fast axis direction of the liquid crystal variable retarder for convenient optical path alignment by users.
